Philips Lighting Tour - YouTube's Best Kept Secret

Philips Lighting is once again off on a customer development tour by organising travelling demonstrations from Capetown to Cairo. They are working on a plan to provide solar-powered street lights and floodlights for soccer pitches.

They have signed a deal with the Dutch Football Association in a scheme to light 90 football stadia in Africa and Latin America with solar lighting.

Presumably that's just the tip of an iceberg. Because in areas where there is no mains electricity, when it gets dark around 6 or 7 pm, there is often nothing to do. Light is essential for studies. It's essential for safe play areas.  It can boost tourism and trade because people will naturally gravitate to the bright lights.

Now Philips is doing the road show again. Though it seems to be YouTube's best kept secret. Just a few views when I checked - most of them mine.

I thought the Soccer Kesha story from Kenya was better told than others on the site.

1.6 billion people still don't have access to mains electricity.

I met Nick Kelso a few years back, a British engineer working in the lighting division of Philips in Eindhoven and the organiser of the first Africa roadshows.
